Second ammendment

Justices Rule For Individual Gun Rights

I don’t know what to think of this. On one hand, my libertarian leanings make me think that gun-control is wrong; the civilians should be able to carry out a armed revolt against the government. It is admirable that the United States had such a radical/revolutionary clause in their constitution. On the other hand, guns in the hands of people just doesn’t make sense. People argue that guns in the hands of people who can’t use them responsibly gives gun-ownership a bad name. But when you live in Atlanta and hear of students getting mugged at gun-point (with a sawed-off shotgun no less), gun ownership seems just wrong. Guns probably made sense in the USA 200 years ago but it doesn’t make any sense in the present day to me. It is an antiquated idea that should be disposed off. Make love not war :) Perhaps my libertarian friends can disabuse me of my notions.

Somehow I doubt those muggers buy their guns legally. Anyway, its not as if gun bans always lead to less gun crime (see D.C.), or that liberal gun laws always lead to more (see Switzerland, where gun ownership is compulsory).

DC has so much left over poverty from the segregationist days while Switzerland has one of the highest standards of living.

So DC will have higher crime (and hence, gun-related crime) regardless of bans/no-bans.

But still I oppose gun control because like Kunal (S) said, the muggers don’t get their guns legally. So curb illegal market, not the guns themselves.

being a resident of Atlanta, I dont approve of gun ownership. How about “sanity” check for owners?
    :P

And yeah, update my link on your webpage. I have put it up over here on my id.

@Sanket: DC goons get their illegal guns because they are easily available if not in DC, just outside it.

@Sudnya: Will update it. And get over your Ayn Rand obsession!

I am late to this post but the mugger argument is bogus. I doubt muggings would really be less effective if the mugger was carrying a fake gun or even a knife instead of a gun.

There are other reasons to control gun ownership: the strongest one in my view is making it harder for people to commit random violence upon a large number of people in moments of mental distress (think Columbine, Virginia tech etc). More effective checks on mental health might help but this is easier said than done and even people who have always seemed perfectly normal can in reality be under extreme emotional distress.

Of all the arguments I’ve heard that are pro gun control the citizens rising in armed revolt is the most ridiculous and the one most frequently used. I understand where it’s coming from but the American Revolution was under completely different conditions with a lot of different factors. If the US government became a dictatorship tomorrow and the dictator really wanted to quell an uprising through force would the fact that people had guns really stop him?
Anyway random visitor here, just thought I’d comment because this comes up frequently and I usually don’t get to vent due to my un-American status :)
