Of all the arguments I’ve heard that are pro gun control the citizens rising in armed revolt is the most ridiculous and the one most frequently used. I understand where it’s coming from but the American Revolution was under completely different conditions with a lot of different factors. If the US government became a dictatorship tomorrow and the dictator really wanted to quell an uprising through force would the fact that people had guns really stop him?
Anyway random visitor here, just thought I’d comment because this comes up frequently and I usually don’t get to vent due to my un-American status :)

I am late to this post but the mugger argument is bogus. I doubt muggings would really be less effective if the mugger was carrying a fake gun or even a knife instead of a gun.

There are other reasons to control gun ownership: the strongest one in my view is making it harder for people to commit random violence upon a large number of people in moments of mental distress (think Columbine, Virginia tech etc). More effective checks on mental health might help but this is easier said than done and even people who have always seemed perfectly normal can in reality be under extreme emotional distress.

I believe the latest Ubuntu distro comes with colored grep by default. I can’t be sure as I am carrying forward my old bashrc.
